Melbourne Girls topple mighty Caulfield for first title
Melbourne Girls Grammar have taken out their first ever Herald Sun Shield title by defeating defending champions Caulfield Grammar by 15 points at Sandringham on Wednesday, with the final score 6.5 (41) to 3.8 (26).
Caulfield came into the game as favourites having not lost a game for a number of years, however were up against it when Melbourne kicked two goals against the wind in the second term to hold a 10-point lead at half time. Three-goals-to-nil in the third term stretched the lead to 29 points at the final change.
While Caulfield showed great fight to narrow the margin, it was too much and Melbourne celebrated with bus loads of fellow students who had come to support them.
Sophie McKay starred for the victors and was awarded the best-on-ground medal.
The Intermediate Girls Division One Grand Final will be contested between Sacred Heart College Geelong and Carey Grammar at Sandringham on Thursday 10 August.
