A super week of Herald Sun Shield Semi-Finals ahead

05 AUG 2024 BY: AFL VICTORIA
Top secondary school football teams from across Victoria will be out to be crowned the state’s best in the annual Herald Sun Shield interschool competition, with a number of sides back to defend their titles.

Herald Sun Shield Grand Final spots are on the line this week with division one girls and boys Semi-Finals taking place.

On Tuesday 6 August, defending champions in Senior Girls Division One, Melbourne Girls Grammar, will be out to reach another decider when they take on Sacred Heart College, Geelong, to kick off a triple-header at DSV Stadium, Williamstown, starting at 9:30am.

Sacred Heart progressed to the semis of the top girls division by beating Ballarat Grammar in the Play-In game last week, after the Geelong Independent School Sports Association (GISSA) representative took out the Senior Girls Division Two title last year.

The other Senior Girls Semi-Final in the top division will be played at Trevor Barker Beach Oval in Sandringham on Tuesday and feature 2022 champions and 2023 runners-up, Caulfield Grammar, who meet SEDA College.

The two Intermedia Girls Semi-Finals, featuring teams with year 10 students and below, will follow at Williamstown after the Melbourne Girls v Sacred Heart clash, firstly with Carey Grammar playing Ballarat Grammar at 11:30am, then 2023 premiers Sacred Heart College, Geelong will face off against Rowville Secondary College.

The fact that Sacred Heart College has teams representing their school association in division one for both Senior and Intermediate Girls is testament to the strength of their school football program.

With the girls on show on Tuesday, on Wednesday it’s all about the boys.

Parade College won both Senior and Intermediate Boys Division One titles in 2023 and both teams are back again having won through as the best from Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) in 2024.

Parade will feature in a double-header at Trevor Barker Beach Oval, Sandringham, starting with the Intermedia Boys Semi-Final at 9:30am against Associated Public Schools (APS) representative, St Kevin's College, who defeated Assumption College in the Play-In game last week.

Then the Senior Boys Semi-Final sees Parade play Padua College, who have again earned their spot in the Herald Sun Shield as the best school from Southern Independent Schools.

Across town at DSV Stadium, Williamstown on Wednesday sees GISSA school Western Heights College take on Herald Sun Shield powerhouse St Patrick’s College, Ballarat at 9:30am in the Intermediate Boys Semi-Final, followed by School Sport Victoria representative Emmanuel College, Warrnambool clashing with Ballarat Grammar.

Division One girls Grand Finals will be played on Tuesday 13 August with the boys deciders the following day on Wednesday 14 August, with all four deciders to be played at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne.
