2018 HSS: Div 1 Senior Boys GF Preview

17 AUG 2018

History will repeat itself this weekend, when St Bernard’s and St Patrick’s go head-to-head for the Division 1 Senior Boys Herald Sun Shield at the MCG on August 18. By Mark Koelmeyer

In a rematch of last year’s thrilling Grand Final, defending champions St Bernard’s will put their title on the line against Ballarat heavyweight’s St Patrick’s who are looking to avenge last year’s 16-point loss and go one better.

In the 2017 final, St Bernard’s upset the perennial favourites to overcome St Patrick’s in a tight low scoring affair and will have to repeat that effort if they are any chance to claim back-to-back premierships and secure its third title overall.

After strong semi-final performances, the game sets up to be a can’t-miss clash with both sides ready to put their best foot forward.

The defending champions took care of Bendigo Senior College with a commanding 102 point victory in its semi-final clash, while St Patrick’s flexed their muscle with an 86 point win over Aquinas College.

While revenge provides St Patrick’s with added motivation heading into the game, the match holds even more significance with head coach Howard Clark set to end his 18-year reign at the helm.

Clark leaves behind a long legacy at St Patrick’s, winning a remarkable eight Herald Sun Shield titles across his 18 years, six of those coming in the last eight outings.

Leading his team to the Grand Final for ten consecutive years, Clark leaves behind a record that is unmatched by any other coach in the competition’s history.

The Division 1 Senior Boys Herald Sun Shield Grand Final will kick off at 10:55am at the MCG on Saturday.
