A total of 22 umpires recently graduated from development squads in 2018 to Victoria’s senior field, boundary and goal umpiring panels (eight field umpires, eight boundary umpires and six goal umpires), with 10 of these promoted umpires set to make their VFL debut in Round 1 this weekend (four field umpires, three boundary umpires and three goal umpires).

In addition, 31 community-league umpires from 2018 have been promoted to Victorian umpiring development squads, which will prepare them for a possible future step up to officiating at state-league level.

AFL State League & Talent Pathway Umpiring Head Coach (Victoria) Cameron Nash said the figures were an indication of the success of Victoria’s umpire talent pathway program.

“In 2018, eight umpires were promoted to senior panels, so to be able to promote 22 umpires this year is a credit to our program and coaches,” Nash said. “With a number of umpires being promoted to AFL panels and other list changes, we were able to promote many talented umpires who have been performing well in their respective development squads.

“There were also a number of female umpire promotions this year, with Courtney Gibson promoted to the Senior Development Field Squad, Greta Miller promoted to the Senior Boundary Squad and Tayla Manning promoted to the Senior Goal Squad.

“Meanwhile, around 50 per cent of the umpires promoted to development squads have come through our rookie squad programs. This meant that in the previous year they umpired with their local group but trained with the VFL umpires once a month, in order to increase their understanding of the expectations and requirements of state-league umpires.”
