The Division 1 Senior Boys Grand Final was played in wet and windy conditions, making for a low-scoring, at times inaccurate affair.

St. Bernard’s led by two points at quarter time, and by five points at half time, though they struggled to find the middle of the sticks. Both teams had just one goal each at the half amidst the wind and the rain.

St. Patrick’s took what chances they could get and snatched the lead by a single point at three-quarter time, before two final quarter goals from St. Bernard’s captain Jake Riccardi put the game beyond doubt. The final score: 6.9 (45) def 4.5 (29)

The win secures St. Bernard’s third Herald Sun Shield, their first triumph in the Grand Final since 2003, alongside their 1991 victory.

Meanwhile, St. Patrick’s have now lost two consecutive Grand Finals, after their run of six consecutive victories from 2010 to 2015.

Rebounding defender Tom Scott was awarded the Kevin Sheehan Medal for St. Patrick’s, while the Neale Daniher Medal was awarded to inside midfielder Xavier O’Halloran from St. Bernard’s.
