What is an AFL School Ambassador?

The AFL Schools Ambassador Program (AFLSA) aims to resource, recognise and reward teachers who strongly promote the game of Australian Football. Importantly, the program aims to establish an alliance between schools and the respective state football bodies to develop and promote Australian Football in the classroom and on the sporting field.

Who can join?

Any AFL-passionate primary school or high school teacher can register as an AFL Ambassador. We are seeking an ambassador in every school in Victoria and, depending on the school size, another AFLSA may be appointed.

What am I expected to do?

As an AFL Ambassador there are certain expectations that AFL Victoria holds:

  • Be strong promoter of Australian Football – especially how it can enhance learning outcomes for students
  • Be a positive advocate for Australian Football programs in school
  • Implement and promote AFL Education Packages in schools
  • Professionally develop and support other staff members in the area of Australian Football
  • Ensure participation of the school in all Australian Football programs
  • Be an active team member of football in your district
What do I have access to as an AFL Ambassador
  • Access to free Curriculum resources and Professional Development
  • Access to AFL Schools Grants

Rewards and Recognition

AFL Victoria values the role that School Ambassadors play in the football community and recognises AFL School Ambassadors each year. All Ambassadors have the opportunity to be nominated as the AFL School Ambassador of the year in 3 categories (Primary, Secondary and Multicultural) to be recognised at an AFL Function.

2018 AFL SCHOOL AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR
Primary School winner: Patrick Swayn

School: Moorooduc Primary School

Winners Profile: Patrick is arguably one of the best all round coaches on the Mornington Peninsula, excelling in his ability to adapt and teach participants from Auskick through to Senior football, across both boys and girls competitions. He is inclusive and has a strong commitment to football development and the development of the whole person. Over the last four years, Paddy has run the Moorooduc Football League (MFL), with games played between students at lunchtime on Tuesday and Friday of each week during term two of the school calendar. The school’s population is 260 students and they have a six-team competition. Each team has approximately 12 players on their list and they play AFL 9’s, with teachers coaching the teams and the presidents of each team being grade-six students. Paddy gives up his private time two days a week to umpire the games, with students acting as live commentators and goal and boundary umpires. The program has not only been a driving force in developing the fitness and football skills of the students, but also teaching them about leadership, improving their organisational skills and learning a bit of IT as well.

Secondary School winner: Leigh Alexander

School: The Hamilton & Alexandra College

Winners Profile: Leigh is a current Level 2 coach and his strong background in football as a player, coach and administrator has enormous impact across not only the staff but also students. As a Physical Education teacher and Sports Coordinator Leigh actively promotes the concept of the ‘South West Girls Football Academy’ to fellow teaching colleagues within the school and to other teachers within the region. He encourages mentor groups to run football tipping competitions at school, encourages and promotes staff to follow/support the school-based teams and their students on weekends and discuss how their students went in their games. Leigh is a very popular teacher amongst his peers and students, his organised but relaxed manner is conducive to achieving wonderful outcomes. Leigh is very proactive with the Secondary Schools Glenelg Division Sports body and is enormously well respected for his enthusiastic contribution. Leigh has been a wonderfully productive School Ambassador for over 14 years.
