Over 250 new footballers will be taking the field and picking up a Sherrin over the next six weeks, with the commencement of the 2020 Towards Zero Unity Cup Hubs.
Currently in its 13th year, the Towards Zero Unity Cup is AFL Victoria’s entry level program for multicultural participants aged between 12-17, aimed at engaging inactive diverse communities and encouraging newly arrived Australians to participate in a specialised football and life skills program.
The six-week pick up and play AFL 9s program includes learning how to play football, professional development sessions tailored to the needs of the participants and education around road safety, employment, nutrition and more. The hubs will come together to form 80 different teams that will feature in the annual gala day event on March 29.
The inaugural Unity Cup gala day was held in 2008 and featured only four teams. Since then, the Towards Zero Unity Cup has grown to include up to 80 teams featuring participants from a range of different backgrounds.
