2018 HSS: Div 1 Senior Boys GF Results

18 AUG 2018

St. Bernard’s has been crowned Herald Sun Shield champions after claiming a 31-point win over St Patrick’s in the Division 1 Senior Boys Grand Final at the MCG on Saturday.

The win sees St. Bernard’s claim back-to-back titles and its fourth shield overall since the competition was established in 1977.

From the outset, St. Bernard’s took control of the match, booting five goals straight and holding St Patrick’s to just four points at quarter time.

It was a highly contested affair in the second term, with both teams applying pressure around stoppages. St Bernard’s made the most of its scoring opportunities to take a 31-point lead at the main break.

St. Patrick’s determination was on show in the second half of the match, finding the big sticks in the third term to chalk up multiple goals.

Despite their efforts, St Patrick’s inaccuracy plagued the boys from Ballarat, restricting them to pull back the margin in the last quarter. The final score 10.10 (70) def 5.9 (39).

St. Bernard’s star Brodie Newman secured best on ground honours with the Neale Daniher Medal, while St. Patrick’s Josh Chatfield won the Kevin Sheehan Medal judged his team’s best.

The Herald Sun Shield competition will continue next month, when the Division 2 Senior Boys Grand Final will be played on September 13 while the Division 2 Senior Girls decider will be held on September 19.
