The 2017 Herald Sun Shield competition will come to a close this week, when Aquinas College meet Woodleigh College in the Division 2 Senior Boys Grand Final on Thursday. Jake Morris reports.
This will be the second year in a row that Aquinas will feature in the Grand Final for the Division 2 Senior Boys competition, after they completed a 40-point win over St Francis Xavier College last year to claim the 2016 Herald Sun Shield title.
Aquinas College Sports Coordinator Bernard Brummell says his side is looking forward to the challenge of claiming back-to-back flags.
“The boys are really keen to get out there and give it a red-hot crack, they have the right intensity and know exactly what to expect from the Woodleigh boys,” Brummell said.
“I’m expecting Ben White, Joel Dagher and our captain Riley Costantino to have a big impact on the match and hopefully sway it in our direction.”
On the other side of the equation, Woodleigh will make their first Herald Sun Shield Boys Grand Final appearance, following in the footsteps of its girls’ team who made their Grand Final debut last season.
Woodleigh’s girls team fell short in their attempt at the school’s first Herald Sun Shield premiership, after going down to Sacred Heart College by seven goals in the school’s inaugural Herald Sun Shield Grand Final appearance last year.
Woodleigh’s boys team will be out to finish what the girls started and claim that elusive premiership.
In addition to the Division 2 Senior Boys Grand Final, the best intellectually disabled students will showcase their skills in a Special Schools Cup exhibition match.
The curtain raiser will see representatives from the Northern Special Schools Association face the Southern Special Schools Association for the second time in the competition’s short history.
The Special Schools Cup will be held at Trevor Barker Oval on Thursday September 14 at 11am ahead of the Herald Sun Shield Division 2 Senior Boys Grand Final at 1pm.
