AFL Victoria congratulates Coburg Districts Football Club from the Essendon District Football League, who have won the 2019 How Inclusive is your Club competition.
The competition welcomed nominations for clubs who have made changes to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for women.
Abbie Storer from Coburg Districts FC nominated her club for their extensive efforts in making the club an inclusive environment for women.
The club begins training late in the evening to allow for women to finish work and organise their family.
In addition, the women’s team trains alongside the men’s team once a week and the two teams share a meal in the club room, allowing the women to develop relationships and be in an inclusive environment.
The club ran an extensive pre-season providing an opportunity for the women to build relationships and improve their fitness before the season commenced.
The club appointed female trainers who understands women’s bodies, making them feel more comfortable.
Women are also involved in the decision-making process at the club, with a Female Football Coordinator sitting on the committee to ensure decision-making is inclusive and appropriate.
Nearly all the women in the team had never played football before and some had never played a team sport before. Coburg Districts FC has built a space where everyone belongs, regardless of their experience, fitness or confidence level.
The Coburg Districts FC will receive a $1,000 Footymart voucher to help buy football equipment to support even greater participation at their club.
Congratulations to the Coburg Districts FC and all nominated clubs.
AFL Victoria and VicHealth would like to thank all clubs for their hard work and determination to make their football club an inclusive environment.
