Excitement is brewing across the state for the second WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships as country and metropolitan leagues prepare to go head-to-head on Saturday May 13.
Following a successful introduction of the competition last year, a total of 30 community football leagues will once again battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights on their quest to be crowned the premier community football league in Victoria.
The number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League will face second-placed Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League at the MCG as a curtain-raiser to the Round 8 dedicated AFL Country Game between Essendon and Geelong.
Spectators are encouraged to arrive at the venue early to enjoy the FREE Country Festival outside the MCG at Yarra Park from 2pm, which includes a host of family friendly activities, entertainment and live music from some of Australia’s country music stars including Shannon Noll and Lee Kernaghan.
In addition, the 11 v 12 match between Hampden Football Netball League and South East Football Netball League will be played at Casey Fields located in Cranbourne East.
In addition to the Championships, the next generation of community football stars will also have the opportunity to don their local colours in a number of junior representative matches being played as curtain raisers to their Community Championship senior game.
This is a terrific initiative for younger players to be able to showcase their talent, represent their league and test their skills against some of the best players across metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria.
