Female Umpire Academy

The Female Umpire Academy is designed to support and develop talented female field umpires and help them climb the umpiring ranks.

Female field umpires are nominated to be part of the Academy and meet once a fortnight for training sessions at IKON Park under the guidance of AFL Field Umpire Mathew Nicholls. fua

Nicholls, who has replaced former AFL field umpire Marty Ellis after three years in the job, will play an active role in the development of the umpires with both an on-field and off-field focus.

Nicholls is considered one of the best umpires in the AFL system with more than 200 games experience and was selected to officiate the 2013 AFL grand final between Hawthorn and Fremantle.

The Academy members will be given opportunities to umpire representative matches deemed suitable by AFL Victoria with the hope that talented female umpires may soon step up to the VFL level.

Nicholls will be assisted by Shannon Kirkby and Alexandria Anthony – both former members of the Female Umpiring Academy.
