RDs 2 & 3: 2017 Metro Junior Champs

The Grand Finals for the 2017 Metro Junior Championships have been decided, after a fascinating series of Division 1 football wrapped up over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

In terms of consistency, the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) has set itself up for success, qualifying for all five Division 1 Grand Finals.  The U15 Girls team lead the charge for YJFL as the only side to finish on top of their group, with all others qualifying in second.

South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) has qualified for three Grand Finals, while the Northern Football League (NFL) and Eastern Football League (EFL) have qualified for one Grand Final each.

In U15 Division 1A, the EFL and YJFL went undefeated in the first two rounds, wrapping up qualification early. Still, a win in the third match would provide momentum heading into the Grand Final, and the EFL took the win by 18 points.

The U15 Division 1B competition featured some close matches across the series, most notably the opening match between SMJFL and EFL. With just a point in it at three-quarter time, South Metro held on to win thanks to three goals from Corey Barden, South Metro’s only multiple goal scorer. South Metro will face the YJFL in the Grand Final, after the YJFL produced a solid win over the EFL in its round three match.

Fourteen goals in three matches from Nathaniel Dear ensured that South Metro also qualified for the U14 Division 1A Grand Final. This included a bag of seven in the first group match against the EFL.

In U14 Division 1B, South Metro qualified on top to set up a blockbuster Grand Final match with YJFL. The last time the pair met, SMJFL pipped YJFL by just three-points in Round two, but a solid win over the Northern Football League in round three will give the YJFL confidence heading into the decider.

Finally in the U15 Girls competition, Yarra Junior Football League finished on top of the ladder showing the great development in young female footballers in the region. YJFL will look to continue its good form when it takes on the Northern Football League in the Grand Final on June 24.
