Australian Football’s unique ability to break down barriers will be on show next week at the 2017 Game On! AMES Cup on Wednesday May 24.
AFL Victoria, in partnership with AMES Australia and the Western Bulldogs Football Club, is holding the third Game On! AMES Cup carnival that will see some of our newest Australians take to the football field.
Engaging with over 100 male and female participants from seven different AMES centres across Melbourne, eight teams will gather at VU Whitten Oval to showcase their newfound skills and reinforce football’s capacity to unite people from all walks of life.
Playing the modified rules of AFL 9s, teams will be divided into Pool A and Pool B to compete for the coveted title in a round-robin tournament.
Brushing up on their skills in a football clinic prior to the competition, participants will get the chance to see what playing Australian Football at the elite level is like with a tour of the Western Bulldogs facilities with AFL Australia Post Multicultural Ambassadors and Western Bulldog stars Jason Johannisen and Lin Jong.
Collingwood AFLW star and Australia Post Multicultural Ambassador Helen Roden and a host of VFL Multicultural Ambassadors will also be in attendance to lend a hand and support participants from the sidelines.
AFL Victoria Multicultural Diversity Manager Xavier Moloney said it was pleasing to be able to provide an opportunity for newly arrived migrants to learn Australia’s national sport.
“We truly believe in our philosophy One Game, Many Cultures and the Game On! AMES Cup really encapsulates all elements of this belief,” Moloney said.
“The Game On! AMES Cup event has been created to engage multicultural people through the vehicle of football and provide them with the opportunity to make friends, establish community connections as well as practice English in a social setting.
“With participants having never picked up a football before, it is hoped that the Game On! AMES Cup is the start of a lifetime of involvement in our great game.”
The 2017 GAME ON! AMES Cup will be held from 11am- 3pm at VU Whitten Oval on Wednesday May 24.
