59 from Vic competitions join AFL lists

59 players from AFL Victoria’s TAC Cup and Peter Jackson VFL competitions joined AFL lists following the NAB AFL Draft, Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft over the last week.

43 TAC Cup players and two VFL players were selected in Friday night’s AFL Draft, representing 58 per cent of the 78 total players picked.

A further eight TAC Cup players and three VFL players were taken from a total of 36 selections in Monday’s Rookie Draft, while one other VFL player was the only player picked in the Pre-Season Draft. This represented just under 50 per cent of all selections across the three drafts coming from Victorian competitions (57 of 115 total selections).

In addition, one TAC Cup player – Gippsland Power multicultural prospect Changkuoth Jiath – was signed as a Category B rookie under the Next Generation Academy rules, as was Bendigo Pioneers and Richmond VFL indigenous youngster Derek Smith.

The TAC Cup’s Eastern Ranges produced the most total draftees of any Victorian club with 10 ahead of the Pioneers and Sandringham Dragons with seven each, while the Box Hill Hawks was the only VFL club to produce multiple draftees (two).

Notably, Western Jets forward/midfielder Cameron Rayner became the TAC Cup’s seventh straight no.1 AFL Draft selection and the 17th in the competition’s 26-year history after being taken by the Brisbane Lions.

He was one of nine TAC Cup players selected in the draft’s top 10 – the most top-10 selections from the competition since 1994 – with TAC Cup clubs providing the top eight draftees as well as 14 of the first 17 picks overall.
