2017 Wheelchair AFL Championship Squads announced

Victoria has named its two representative state squads ahead of the 2017 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championship on March 14-17.

Victoria has named its two representative state squads ahead of the 2017 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championship on March 14-17.

Held at the State Netball Hockey Centre, the 2017 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championships provides people with a disability with the opportunity to play Australia’s traditional game in a safe and fun environment.

Seven teams will battle it out for the coveted title, with representative sides from South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Defence Force, Returned Service League (RSL) and Victoria ready to go head to head.

Of the 14 players selected in the Victorian Bandits and Victorian Cyclones squads, three hail from Country Victoria, while a further three participants were born overseas.

Included in the Victorian Bandits team is former Australian wheelchair tennis and basketball player Brendan Stroud and Disability Sport & Recreation CEO Richard Amon, while 18-year-old Bendigo local Caleb Logan, former wheelchair state basketballer James Leonard and Hungarian-born Zsolt Ugrai will suit up for the Victorian Cyclones team.

With one in five Australian’s diagnosed with a developmental disorder and more than 10,000 people with spinal cord injury across the country, FIDA Football and Access All Abilities Program Manager, Tim Nield said it was pleasing to provide more Victorians with the opportunity to play Australian Football.

“It’s fantastic to be able to have two representative squads participate in this year’s Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championships,” Nield said.

“Working in partnership with Disability Sport & Recreation, we have doubled our participation numbers in a 12 month period and provide participants from all corners of the state with the chance to play in the Championships is something we are really proud of.

“Victoria is the home of Australian Football, so we are excited to give people with disability the opportunity to not only showcase their skills, but to represent their state in our great game.”

The 2017 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championships kicks off from 2pm from March 14-17 at the State Netball Hockey Centre.
